Turkish Embassy in Canberra

Ambassador's Message

I took up my duties as the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey following a ceremony held at the Government House on 14 October 2015, during which I have presented my credentials to the Governor-General H.E. Mr. Peter Cosgrove. I am very pleased and honoured to be representing Turkey in the friendly country of Australia.

The history of Turkey and Australia dates back to Gallipoli Battles which stand in the memories of both nations as a bitter experience. Although belligerent parties, the two peoples have achieved to display the wisdom of nurturing a long-lasting friendship after the war thanks to the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the modern Turkish Republic, his successors and their Australian counterparts.

This year, various ceremonial events on the commemoration of the centenary of the Çanakkale Wars have successfully taken place at highest level in Çanakkale, in April and August. Also the year 2015 is celebrated as “the Year of Turkish Culture in Australia” and “the year of Australian Culture in Turkey”. Within the framework of the cultural year, we have found the opportunity to promote our cultural and artistic values in Australia in cooperation with our Australian counterparts.

An approximate number of 150 thousand Australian citizens of Turkish origin constitute a special and strong human bond and cultural bridge between our two countries. I am happy to witness that the members of Turkish community in Australia contribute to the multicultural Australian society by taking part in all walks of life and have succeeded in integrating with the wider community while maintaining their cultural heritage and language.

I am honoured to be appointed as the Turkish Ambassador to Australia with which we enjoy good and friendly relations. During my tenure, myself and my staff will spare no effort to further the bilateral ties in the best interests of our nations.

Sincerely yours,

Vakur Gökdenizler

Ambassador
